Test Kitchen Tip
Assemble the French toast the night before and chill it, then all that’s left to do in the morning is throw it in the oven and make the syrup.
Instructions
For the French toast, coat a baking sheet with melted butter.
Combine eggs, milk, cream, orange liqueur, granulated sugar, and mace. Dip bread into egg mixture to coat both sides. Arrange slices on prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Pour remaining egg mixture over the top; refrigerate, covered, 2 hours or overnight.
Preheat oven to 475°. Bring chilled French toast to room temperature.
Bake French toast until puffed and golden, 7–8 minutes per side. Broil French toast on high with rack 6 inches from element until it begins to brown, about 3 minutes.
For the syrup, simmer maple syrup, juice, 1 Tbsp. butter, and salt in a saucepan over medium.
Off heat, whisk in vanilla.
Garnish French toast with orange segments, almonds, and powdered sugar. Serve French toast with maple-orange syrup.
