Preheat oven to 350°. Spray a 10-inch cast-iron skillet with baking spray with flour.

Beat butter and brown sugar in a large bowl with a mixer at medium speed until fluffy, about 2 minutes, stopping to scrape sides of bowl. Add eggs, beating until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Beat in vanilla.

Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. With mixer on low speed, gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture, beating after each addition just until combined, stopping to scrape sides of bowl as needed. Spread batter into prepared pan. Arrange figs, cut side up, on top of batter. Sprinkle with granulated sugar.

Bake until golden brown and a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 50 to 55 minutes. Let cool for 20 minutes. Serve warm.
