Smoky Orange Old-Fashioned

You'll want to make your Charred Orange Bourbon at least 24 hours ahead of time for this Smoky Orange Old-Fashioned, so plan ahead. You can add even more orange flavor to this classic cocktail by using 1 teaspoon of syrup from the Candied Oranges in place of sugar and water.

FOR THE CHARRED ORANGE BOURBON:

Test Kitchen Tip

If you have a kitchen torch, you can use it to char the orange slices. Place orange slices on a baking sheet, and char with a kitchen torch until pulp and edges begin to turn black.

Instructions

Stir together Charred Orange Bourbon, sugar, 1 teaspoon water, and bitters in a cocktail glass until sugar is dissolved. Add ice. Garnish with an orange slice, if desired. Serve immediately.

For the Charred Orange Bourbon

Preheat oven to broil.

Place orange quarters on a sheet pan; broil until fruit begins to turn black, about 15 minutes. (See Test Kitchen Tip for alternate charring method.)

Place oranges in a sterilized wide-mouth glass jar; add bourbon. Seal, and store in a cool, dark place for at least 24 hours or up to 1 week.

Strain mixture through a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheese cloth, discarding solids. Store in an airtight glass container in a cool, dark place for up to 3 months.
