We have another smashing good drink — the Strawberry Gin
Smash. Combining strawberry, basil, and a little sweetness, then
finishing with a splash of gin, makes for one smooth libation.
The smash cocktail is over
a century old, and probably one of the
easiest drinks to make. Besides a spirit,
it usually consists of seasonal fruit, and
an herb, along with a sweetener, over ice.

Test Kitchen Tip
If you don’t want strawberry bits
in your drink, strain the syrup after
it’s had a chance to cool.
Instructions
Heat chopped strawberries,
water, sugar, and basil leaves in
a saucepan over high to a boil.
Reduce heat to medium-low,
simmer syrup until sugar dissolves
and flavors infuse, 10 minutes;
crush strawberries with a potato
masher. Let strawberry syrup cool
to room temperature; discard basil
leaves, transfer to a pitcher, and
chill until ready to serve.
Stir gin and lemon juice into
strawberry syrup; divide among
four glasses filled with crushed
ice and top with desired amount
of club soda.
Garnish drinks with basil, whole
strawberries, and lemon slices.
