Test Kitchen Tip

Potatoes and cream help balance the sharp flavor of turnips, yielding this comforting yet refined casserole.

Instructions

Melt ½ cup butter in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add flour, and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Add potatoes, turnips, garlic, salt, sage, and cream; cook until potatoes are just tender, about 20 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350°. Place greens in a 12-inch skillet. Pour potato mixture over greens.

Bake for 25 minutes.

Stir together bread crumbs, cheese, pecans, and melted butter in a small bowl. Sprinkle over potato mixture.

Bake until browned, 5 to 6 minutes more. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Top with sage, if desired.
