The Most Important Serving Utensils for Every Kitchen
Every home has a functional kitchen but not every kitchen is put together to minimize drudgery and hassle. For instance, not every kitchen has a can opener or a ladle but if you’ve ever used these items, you won’t want to live without them.
That’s why we’ve put together a list of 13 kitchen utensils that are often neglected but are a sure-shot way to bring you ease and quick results in the kitchen.
1. Non-stick frying pan
A normal frying pan will be your go-to cooking utensil until you use a non-stick pan. The latter will be exponentially easier to clean and that’s exactly why you need it in your arsenal.
2. Glass baking dish
A glass baking dish will allow you to make desserts, bake lasagne, chicken, veggies and more. You’ll also be able to serve these delicious cuisines in that very dish.
3. Peeler
A vegetable or potato peeler is a must-have! While you may be able to make your ends meet with a knife, the peeling process will never be as smooth as it will be with a dedicated peeler.
4. Tongs
Tongs are essential for a number of things — for turning tortillas, serving salad and serving meat. You can also use small plastic tongs for picking up ice cubes out of a container.
5. Ladle
There are lots of ladles out there used for soups and stew. The designs vary but a typical ladle comes with a long handle with a small bowl at the end. The bowl is oriented at an angle that makes it easy to lift liquid or broth out of the pot. You can also buy a slotted ladle to pick up the cooked goodies out of a broth (typically used in Chinese hot pot).
6. Cutting board
A good, solid cutting board will protect your hands and allow you to cut your fruits, veggies and meat within seconds. We suggest buying marble cutting boards since plastic ones are prone to chipping.
7. Can opener
Opening a can without a can opener is near-impossible. If you’re fond of canned fruits, beans, mushrooms and vegetables, you’ll need a can opener. Coconut milk, crushed tomatoes, curry paste and cream cheese are some other items that come in a can.
8. Metal spatula
Need to fry eggs for breakfast? A metal spatula will have your back. Making mac and cheese for dinner? You’ll need a metal spatula to mix the ingredients. In other words, you’ll need your metal spatula for cooking or frying food.
9. Whisk
Whether you’re fond of baking cakes or just need to beat eggs for breakfast, a whisk will always come in handy.
10. Knives
You need to have 2-3 good-quality, sharp knives. You’ll need at least one big knife for cutting meat and large vegetables and a moderately-sized knife for fruits and small veggies.
11. Grater
You’ll need a grater to grate cheese, coconut, carrot, ginger, potato and more! It’s also known as a shredder.
12. Shears
Shears are more versatile than your standard pair of scissors. You can use them to cut chillis, open packaging and even work around meat and poultry. They’re designed in a way that helps you grip items easily — as opposed to your standard scissors. If you need to cut slippery, oily bacon, you can cut it up easily with shears.
13. Large stainless steel pot
Lastly, you don’t want to forget a large pot. While you can do a lot with small pots, they’ll never come close to the versatility you get with a large pot. You could make pasta, rice, stew, soup and more. Heck, you could even cook a whole chicken or mutton leg in a large pot if need be.
