Encha’s history began in the early 2010s when the founder, Li Gong, tasted the most delicate matcha from an organic farm in Japan. Before this moment, he was a busy professional who relied on coffee to combat jet lag and stay alert during a work trip to London. However, this reliance on coffee led to an anxious state of mind and unclear thoughts. 

On a flight back to San Francisco, Li Gong watched “Ask This of Rikyu,” a film that showcased the zen elegance of Rikyu’s tea ceremony. This experience ignited a desire to live an organic and natural lifestyle.

In the summer of 2014, Li Gong embarked on a nature quest, hopping between Japan and eastern China in search of organic green tea farms. During his visit, he discovered that the finest organic green teas had a pleasant and delicate grassy note that was reminiscent of early spring in nature. Eventually, he returned to San Francisco, carrying a suitcase filled with organic green teas, including matcha. 

After tasting the best organic matcha he had ever tasted from a farm in Uji, Gong broadened his research to look into the benefits of matcha, particularly caffeine, and theanine. He felt compelled to share this natural taste and its benefits with others. This calling led him to quit his job and establish Encha on November 18, 2014. Since then, the brand has been committed to providing high-quality, organic matcha and promoting a healthier, more mindful way of living.
